No relief from Romney
"The Lowell Sun"
8/7/2006
Lead Editorial:
We find it inconceivable that Gov. Mitt Romney claims the state can do nothing to help those residents still struggling to rebuild homes and businesses after the May flood.
Massachusetts is sitting on millions in unspent emergency funds from Hurricane Katrina and more than $1 billion in cash reserves, yet Romney has failed to even respond to the Lowell delegation's requests to discuss additional aid for victims.
The governor's spokesman -- since Romney can't be bothered to comment now that the photo opportunities have dried up even though some residents' basements haven't -- said the state will not consider spending its own money for flood victims until it's clear how much cash the federal government will give.
It's been two months, governor. Many Massachusetts residents are still living in temporary housing or trying to rebuild destroyed basements and first floors, racking up credit-card debt and taking out home-equity loans.
What's wrong with fronting the money and having those loans repaid when, and if, federal agencies come through with more cash?
If ignoring the pleas of legislators and constituents is the way Romney's going to handle a crisis situation, why would anyone vote for him for president? How would he handle a national crisis, by flying in for photo ops and then hiding in his White House office?
There were many epic fails in the Romney occupation of Massachusetts. The Governor raised fees, neglected education and practiced crony hiring for State offices. But this one really shows Romney's true relationship to voters.

Mitt Romney: Federal Disaster Relief For Tornado And Flood Victims Is "Immoral,"
From the primary debates earlier this year:
Asked about federal disaster relief for recent tornado and flood victims at last night’s GOP debate, candidate Mitt Romney called the spending “immoral” and said the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be privatized. With greenhouse pollution on the rise, the United States has been struck by a “punishing series of billion-dollar disasters.”
Embracing a radical anti-government ideology from the most extreme elements of the Tea Party, Romney said that the victims in Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and other communities hit by tornadoes and flooding should not receive governmental assistance. He argued it is “simply immoral” for there to be deficit spending that could harm future generations:

UPDATE: Flip Flopper in Chief, Mitt Romney is now in favor of FEMA. Check back in 10 minutes for further changes and policy reversals.
Mitt flips on FEMA, now would keep it
-clip-
Yesterday, we noted that even as a massive super storm was bearing down on the East Coast, Mitt Romney’s campaign was standing by his suggestion in a GOP debate last year that he would end FEMA and make the states handle disaster relief on their own. But how much has changed in 24 hours.

Romney Was Sweating Like A Liar During A Polygraph Test
Which is what these debates are, a test of character and honesty. Romney has a long history of dishonesty, secrecy and stone cold weirdness. The nation saw it tonight. President Obama treated Romney like a Somali pirate.
Weird Willard, from the mouth of a Massachusetts State Health Professional
Willard is weird, uncomfortable, awkward and oh so corporate. That's who he is. Last summer I sat in a seat on a plane next to a Health Professional with state government in Massachusetts. She said the Romney administration had every study done by her office cleared by Romney's office before it could be released. This never happened before, or since.
She said Romney was a "strange man" and she was very uncomfortable around him and his staff. She was stunned when he bought and destroyed the hard drives of every computer in the Governor's office when he left office. I asked her, "Isn't this what a person would do if he did not want anyone to know what went on during his administration?" She had a one word answer. "Yes."

Romney and Bain profited from MASSIVE Medicare Fraud
From the delightful gift that is John McCain’s opposition research on Mitt Romney (courtesy of namelessgenxer) comes the sordid tale of Mitt Romney's tenure on the board of Damon Clinical Laboratories, which plead guilty to charges of defrauding Medicare and agreed to pay what was at the time the largest health care criminal fraud fine in history – $35,300,000.00 They also agreed to larger civil fines which totaled $83,700,000.00.
The time line goes as follows.
1988: Damon begins a systemic practice of fraud. The government estimates later that the total cost to taxpayers of this fraud is around $40,000,000
1990: Bain Capital (CEO Mitt Romney) buys a minority stake in Damon. Mitt takes a seat on the board of directors
1990 to 1993: Mitt serves on the board of directors, earning ~$10,000 per year for doing so. He is on the company’s “Strategic Planning” committee
1992: Romney said that Rosen told the board in about 1992 ‘that all current practices at the company were now in conformity with government regulations and that in the past there may have been practices which would not be deemed appropriate.
1993: Damon is taken over by Corning, with Mitt Romney voting in favor of the acquisition
1993: Corning immediately closes Damon’s Massachusetts plant and lays off 115 workers
1993: Corning uncovers the fraud and alerts authorities. The SEC filings made by Damon prior to the acquisition make no mention of any potential earnings write-downs or legal problems
1993: Mitt Romney’s share of Bain’s profit from the Damon investment: $473,000
1993: Bain’s profit from its investment in Damon: $7,400,000, which represented a tripling of the initial investment
1994: Running for Senator, Mitt Romney says:
I’m proud of the small part I played in the growth of Damon,’ Romney said yesterday. ‘It’s something that Ted Kennedy doesn’t have a clue about – creating real jobs in the private sector.
2002: While running for governor, Romney claims that he helped uncover the fraud by starting an investigation. This version of events is disputed by Corning and by the Federal Prosecutors. Romney also says he never alerted the authorities, which no one disputes.

Romney and Ryan, the Animal House Ticket, -fragging Middle Class America-
If you are for the end of Medicare, and Social Security, the two most effective poverty fighting programs in history, Paul Ryan's your guy.
He's an articulate Sarah Palin, born of status and privilege. He's a life long career politician that managed to pass 2 bills in 14 years in Congress. He'll tell you about how effective he's been. And he's a philosophical fan of the lunatic Ayn Rand. He won't tell you about Ayn Rand
Who was Ayn Rand? She was against religion and God. She embraced selfishness. She was fascinated with serial killer William Hickman, and wrote that the serial killer was an ideal man as he did what he pleased not worrying what others thought.
Ayn Rand is a darling and prophet of many in today's Republican party, including Paul Ryan. Go figure
To view a video link into the twisted mind of Paul Ryan's philosophical hero, Ayn Rand, hit on the youtube links at : http://bureaucountydems.blogspot.com/2011/06/ayn-rand-gop-and-jesus.htmlcountydems.blogspot.com.

CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE? NEITHER CAN I.
With Paul Ryan playing Doug Neidermeyer and money bags Rmoney playing the role of Gregory Marmalard we now have the perfect Animal House ticket for the White House.
On behalf of all Delta’s, we thank you.
-In this example of life imitating art, the character Neidermeyer volunteered for service in Vietnam were he was promptly fragged by his own troops. In real life Romney demonstrated in support of that war but in Cheney-esque fashion got three student deferments before getting a missionary deferment during which time he palled around France with cheese eating surrender monkeys. Ryan, if drafted into service as VP, has laid out a budget that would immediately frag the middle class.-

ROMNEY IS RUNNING FOR GEORGE W. BUSH'S 3RD TERM, here's the graph
You are reading this right. There is nothing wrong with your eyes. Under Romney's plan, millionaires and billionaires will pay less in taxes while the poor will pay more. On the bright side the middle class would get a few meager crumbs.
Romney is doubling down on the same tax policies that brought us a decade of no job growth, $9.3 trillion in National Debt, and plunged the nation into the second greatest economic free-fall in history.
source: http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=3695
Given the failed record of Trickle Down Economics why would Romney continue to insist on massive tax-give-aways to multi-millionaires like himself? The answer lies close to one of his many homes.
Willard Romney. he's not one of us. He never has been. He never will be.
Why Does Mitt Romney Like Firing People? Because He Made $20,000 On Every Laid-Off Worker
Why Does Mitt Romney Like Firing People? Because He Made $20,000 On Every Laid-Off Worker

Mitt Romney would prefer for you to recall just one number regarding his record at Bain Capital. That would be 100,000 — the number of jobs that the Republican candidate claims he created during 15 years at the private equity firm.
But now there is a more interesting, plausible and relevant number: $20,000. That’s how much money Romney is estimated to have made from each worker laid off during Bain’s many corporate takeovers.
• American Pad & Paper: Bain invested $5 million in the Ohio paper company in 1992, and reportedly collected $100 million in dividends on that investment. But AMPAD went bankrupt in 2000, resulting in 385 employees losing their jobs.
• Dade Behring: Bain invested $415 million in a leveraged buyout in 1994, borrowed an additional $421 million, and ultimately walked away with $1.78 billion. Dade filed for bankruptcy in 2002, and laid off 2,000 employees.
• DDI Corporation: Bain reportedly invested $46.3 million in the electronic parts manufacturer 1997, earning $85.5 million in profits plus $10 million more in management fees. When the company went bankrupt several years later, 2,100 workers were laid off.
• GS Industries: In 1993, Bain invested $60 million in the Kansas City steel maker, borrowed a lot of money, and then took $65 million in dividends. But GS eventually went bankrupt in 2002, and 750 workers lost their jobs and pensions.
• Stage Stores: Bain invested $5 million to purchase the Houston-based retailer and took it public in the mid-’90s, reaping $100 million from stock offerings. In 2000, following Romney’s departure from Bain, Stage filed for bankruptcy and 5,795 workers were reportedly dismissed.
While it is true that some of those companies went under after Romney had left Bain, the job growth for which he now seeks credit also occurred after his departure in 1999. But the bankruptcies — and the bust-out scenario that helped Bain to profit anyway — are not news. What AOL’s Daily Finance has contributed to the Bain debate is a simple calculation: Bain Capital booked $1.995 billion in profits from the layoffs of 11,030 workers at various firms. And by that scoring, Romney earned roughly $20,000 himself for each of those fired employees. Nice work if you can get it (or take it away from someone else).

Compare Your Tax Rate To Multi-Millionaire Mitt Romney's Tax Rate
Hit on the link below to see how adopting the Buffet/Reagan Rule would help prevent multi-millionaires like Willard Romney from paying a lower tax rate than you.
We paid a tax rate of 20.9% last year. Romney's tax rate? 13.9%*
Mitt Romney would protect a tax code that allows millionaires like himself to take advantage of loopholes and tax havens. Well isn't that special?

Axelrod on Romney: He's Not A Job Creator, He's A Corporate Raider
By Susie Madrak:
David Axelrod appeared on ABC News “This Week with George Stephanopoulos" to defend the president's record against attacks by Republican nominees at last night's debate. First, he argues that the president has done a good job on the economy:
STEPHANOPOULOS: It is good to be back. Boy, you saw right [out] of the box, Mitt Romney last night walking that tightrope on the economy, welcoming the good news, but saying President Obama doesn't deserve any credit for it. He's made things worse. That's going to be the key debate of this campaign.
AXELROD: He ought to ask 1.5 million auto workers and people who work in the auto industry who are working today because the president intervened when Mitt Romney said we should let Detroit go bankrupt.....
[Romney] has a lot of arguments, none of them are supported by facts. If you look at the history of this, the president came to office. The quarter before he got to office, the country, the economy shrunk by 9 percent. The first month he was there, the country lost 750,000 jobs. We have had 22 months of private-sector job growth now. It's been a climb up. And there are a series of -- manufacturing up for the first time in decades....
let's talk about Bain and let's talk about what it was and what he did. His partner said in The L.A. Times, our job was not to create jobs, our job was to create wealth for our partners. And here's what they did. They closed down more than 1,000 plant stores and offices. They outsourced tens of thousands of jobs, and they took 12 companies to bankruptcy. And on those bankruptcies, he and his partners made hundreds of millions of dollars. He says this is the real economy, this is the model for the country. I don't think those are the values that people want to animate our economy. He's not a job creator, he's a corporate raider.
Those aren't the values that we want to lead our economy....
